Abstract

Catalysts useful in the hydrogenation of benzene and cyclohexene comprise intimate homogeneous mixtures of oxides of two or more platinum group metals (excluding Os and combinations of Pt with Ru or Rh), the product having been obtained by fusing salts of the metals with sodium nitrate. If desired, the catalyst may be subjected to reduction of oxides to metals. Usually reduction is effected in methanolic solution. Comparative examples are given.ALSO:Alloys which may be used as catalysts comprise 99% Pt 1% Ir, 97.5% Pt 2.5% Ir, 95% Pt 5% Ir, 92.5% Pt 7.5% Ir, 90% Pt 10% Ir, 85% Pt 15% Ir, 75% Pt 25% Ir, 50% Pt 50% Ir, 25% Pt 75% Ir, 75% Pt 25% Pd, 50% Pt 50% Pd, 35% Pt 65% Pd, 25% Pt 75% Pd, 15% Pt 85% Pd, 85% Pd 15% Ru, 75% Pd 25% Ru, 65% Pd, 35% Ru, 50% Pd 50% Ru, 35% Pd 65% Ru, 25% Pd 75% Ru, 10% Pd 90% Ru, 75% Rh 25% Ru, 50% Rh 50% Ru, 25% Rh 75% Ru, 75% Rh 25% Pd, 50% Rh 50% Pd, 25% Rh 75% Pd. Reference is also made to ternary and higher precious metal combinations e.g. Ir-Pt-Ru.ALSO:Catalysts useful in the hydrogenation of nitrobenzene, phenol, methyl ethyl ketone, maleic acid, 2-methyl but-3-yn-2-ol and 2-methyl but-3-en-2-ol comprise intimate homogeneous mixtures of oxides of two or more platinum group metals (excluding Os and combinations of Pt with Ru or Rh), the product having been obtained by fusing salts of the metals with sodium nitrate. If desired, the catalyst may be subjected to reduction of oxides to metals. Usually reduction takes place in methanolic solution, except for phenol and methyl ethyl ketone which are reduced in aqueous solution. Comparative examples are given.ALSO:Catalysts comprise an intimate homogeneous mixture of the oxides of two or more metals of Pt, Pd, Ir, Ru and Rh (except Pt+Ru or Rh), the mixture having been obtained by fusion of the corresponding salts with NaNo3. The catalysts may be reduced to metallic form and/or supported on SiO2, Al2O3 or mixtures thereof.
