Abstract

1,124,492. Protective arrangements. A. REYROLLE & CO. Ltd. 22 April, 1966 [23 April, 1965], No. 17292/65. Heading H2K. [Also in Division H3] A time delayed switch for a protective system comprises a transistor-type Miller integrator timer in which the Miller capacitor is connected to a tapping point on the output resistor of the amplifier so that it is given a small charge at the commencement of the timing period. When a fault occurs a reed relay 10 makes a contact 11 so that a capacitor 60 coupled in Miller fashion between the output and input of an amplifier 50, 51, 52 commences to charge. Charging continues until the output from a potentiometer 64 is sufficient to change over the conducting conditions of a Schmitttype circuit 65-75 and so operate or release a tripping relay 75 depending upon whether it is connected by links 77 to the output of transistor 67 or 68. When the relay contact 11 is opened the capacitor discharges quickly through diodes 61, 62 and potentiometer 53, 63. In order to avoid timing uncertainties due to the difficulty of completely discharging the Miller capacitor 60, its upper terminal is connected to a tapping on the resistor load 54, 55 of the Miller amplifier so as rapidly to charge capacitor 60 to a small value prior to the main charging period. A time lag varying inversely with the input may be obtained by charging the capacitor from the protected supply. Alternatively (as in Fig. 2, not shown) a characteristic of the form IT = K, or 1<SP>2</SP>T = K or according to BSS142 may be obtained by feeding the input current (81) for the capacitor through a transformer to a shaping circuit (80). In addition, in Fig. 2, the. integrator amplifier uses complementary-type transistors (85, 88, 89) to reduce the threshold voltage and a complementary output switch is connected to the amplifier through a diode to operate the relay when the capacitor charge reaches a predetermined value.
