Abstract

<PICT:1124393/C1/1> In apparatus for cutting continuously moving glass tube or rod 6, at least one cutting member 12 travels, as on a chain 11, parallel to the tube or rod 6 to be cut and the cutting members 12 are attached to the inside of a rotatable drum 3 whose axis of rotation coincides with the axis of the tube or rod 6 so that the cutting members 12 rotate about the tube or rod 6. The drum 3, rotated through gearing from the glass tube or rod drawing machine, consists of two end discs 4 rigidly connected by bars 5. Chains 11 pass over rollers 9, 10 secured to the discs 4, the rollers being coupled mechanically to the drum drive, the speed of the drive being chosen so that the cutting members move with the tube or rod 6 at the same rate. The cutting members 12 secured to the chains 11 consist of a suspension bracket 13 carrying a pair of bearing rollers 15 and a cutting disc 14 is secured adjacent the rollers 15, the number of discs 14 to the chain 11 being normally three or four depending on the lengths required to be cut. The cutting discs 14 may be driven to assist the cutting action.
