Abstract

1,124,145. Joint-making packing. NORTH AMERICAN AVIATION Inc. 6 June, 1966, No. 25160/66. Heading F2B. A seal 10 for preventing leakage between fixed parts 1 and 2 of a rocket comprises side walls 12a, 12b extending from a base portion 18, and one or more passages 15 to allow flow of fluid from between sealing surfaces 11a 17a on one side of the seal to between sealing surfaces 11b, 17b on the other side. The sealing surfaces may be formed by machining the base material of the seal, but preferably they are formed by a coating of copper or P.T.F.E. The seal is clamped in position by bolts 4 which pass through bolt holes 16 in a portion 19 which serves as a spacer. Leakage of fluid past the sealing surfaces 11a 11b which act as the primary sealing surfaces, may be detected through a port 50. Seals 20, 30 constructed according to the invention are provided between fixed parts 2, 3, any leakage past the primary sealing surfaces being detectable through ports 51, 37, 38. If desired, the sealing surfaces 17a, 17b may be provided on the spacer 19 instead of on the base portion 18 and the bolt holes used to interconnect each side of the seal. In another embodiment, the spacer 19 and grooves 14a, 14b are omitted.
