<PICT:1123875/C4-C5/1> <PICT:1123875/C4-C5/2> A mixture for removing and replacing coke oven lids comprises a lid-gripping mechanism (42), Fig. 4 (not shown) and scrapers 45 mounted at the end of a casing 10 for a horizontal reduction gear 19, 35 which drives the mechanism (42), and a telescopic charging device 23 mounted laterally on a bracket 22 of the casing 10. The machine appears to operate as follows: a motor 3 rotates a shaft 17, 18, Fig. 5, which drives the gears 19, 35, and simultaneously lowers the casing 10 through the parts 9, 12 . . . 16. A pin 21 engaging a slot 7 rotates the casing 10 to swing the mechanism (42) and the attached lid clear of the charging hole and centre the axes of the mechanism (42) and lid. A dwell at the bottom of the vertical motion of the part 9, ensured by a pin-and-slot connection between the levers 14, 15, allows the gears 19, 35 to rotate the lid several times before it is lifted clear of the charging hole, the motor 3 being then automatically stopped, and the device 23 brought over the charging hole. A drive on the charging wagon actuates levers (69 ... 71), Fig. 3 (not shown), to open a gate (68) under the charging bunker and simultaneously, through roller (74) on cam 28, rotate an arm 27 and lower a funnel (24) of the telescopic device 23. After charging, retraction of the funnel (24) and closing of the gate (68), the casing 10 is brought over the charging hole, and the motor 3 driven in reverse direction so that a cam 50 actuates a lever 52 (Fig. 5) and causes a ring 48 to rise and free arms 46 which are driven by the gears 19, 35 and carry the scrapers 45. A support 58 prevents lowering the part 9 (and hence of the lid) while scraping takes place. Continuing rotation of the cam 50 allows the lever 52 to rise, terminating scraping and releasing the part 9 to replace the lid.
