Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of formula <FORM:1123562/C2/1> wherein R3 is a 3-keto-4-dehydro-, 3-keto-4,6 -bisdehydro -, 3 - keto - 1,4 - bisdehydro -, 3 - keto - 1,4,6-trisdehydro- or 3-acyloxy-3,5-bisdehydro-system, R6 is a hydrogen, fluorine, chlorine or bromine atom or a methyl group, R21 is a hydrogen atom or an hydroxy or acyloxy group, X1 is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group and X2 is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl, acyl or heterocyclyl group, with the exception of compounds wherein R3 is a 3-acyloxy-3,5-bisdehydro-system and R6 is a fluorine, chlorine or bromine atom, and their preparation by (a) reaction of a 16a ,17a -diol with an aldehyde or ketone, (b) 21-hydroxylation or acyloxylation, (c) 6-halogenation or methylation, (d) 1,2 or 6,7-dehydrogenation or (e) enol acylation. 16a ,17a -Dihydroxy-starting materials are prepared by dehydration of a 16-hydroxy compound to give a 16-dehydro-compound, followed by hydroxylation. The compounds of the invention have progestational activity and may be used in pharmaceutical compositions in combination with a carrier, for example in forms suitable for oral or parenteral administration.
