Abstract

A gas-producing suppository comprises ingredients capable of liberating a non-toxic gas on insertion into a body cavity incorporated in a binder consisting of one or more triglycerides of fatty acids of vegetable origin, with or without corresponding mono or diglycerides, and having a melting point of 33.5-35.5 DEG C, a saponification number of 230-240 and an iodine number below 7. Suitable gas forming ingredients are a carbonate or bicarbonate of sodium or potassium with sodium hydrogen phosphate, tartaric or citric acid or their alkali metal hydrogen salts, or lactic acid. The suppositories are prepared by admixture of a finely ground mixture of the gas forming ingredients with the melted binder, the completed composition then being poured into moulds. The suppositories may be sealed into film strips for packaging.
