1,123,277. Hydraulic apparatus for loading machine-rollers. JOH. KLEINEWEFERS SOHNE. Nov.29, 1966 [Jan. 3, 1966], No. 53399/66. Heading F1P. A hydraulic system for a calender press includes a pair of cylinders 9, 10 containing pistons 16 attached to the uppermost set of rolls (not shown), and electrically operated valves 6, 7 that can be set in any one of three different ways so as to regulate either the loading or the position of said rolls relative to a lowermost set, a pair of hydraulic accumulators 19 on the output side of two pumps 1, 2 being disconnected therefrom whenever the valves aforesaid are set to effect lifting of the uppermost set of rolls so that the entire output of the pumps is directed to the cylinders 9, 10 during such action, which may be required in an emergency, e.g. when the web of material such as paper that is being calendered is damaged. Push-button switches 26, 27, 28 control the valves 6, 7, the switch 26 being operated when the uppermost set of rolls is to be raised, operation of which switch may be initiated by a photo-electric device (not shown) detecting damage in the beforementioned web. In one setting of the valves 6, 7 (as shown), the two ends of each of the cylinders 9,10 are connected to a reservoir 3 for hydraulic fluid whereby loading of the rolls is solely due to their own weight and that of the pistons 16. In another setting, both ends of each cylinder are connected to the output sides of the pumps so as to reduce the loading of the uppermost set of rolls. Alternatively, additional loading is effected by the output sides of the pumps being connected to the uppermost ends of the cylinders. In a third setting, the output sides of the pumps are connected to the lowermost ends of the cylinders while the other ends thereof are connected to the reservoir so that the uppermost set of rolls is lifted. The accumulators are charged with hydraulic fluid through conduits 22 whenever the uppermost ends of the cylinders 9, 10 are connected to the output sides of the pumps, charging through conduits 20 being prevented by non-return valves 21. Alternatively, the accumulators are charged through electrically controlled valves 24 and conduits 25, which valves are closed when the third setting aforesaid is selected.
