Abstract
1,122,867. Stretch - forming; shearing. JOSHUA BIGWOOD & SON Ltd. 30 June, 1967 [7 July, 1966], No. 30519/66. Headings B3E, B3Q and B3W. A method of stretch-draw forming continuous strip metal 11 comprises feeding the strip between a pair of tensioning means 19, 20 one on each side of a pair of drawing dies 15, 17, tensioning the portion of strip between the means 19, 20 beyond its elastic limit, drawing the portion between the dies to form an article, releasing the tensioning means and freeing the portion from the dies, then moving the strip to feed a further portion between the dies and carry the formed portion beyond the tensioning means 20 so that it may be cut from the remainder of the strip, and continuously repeating the above steps. A coil-breaker 12, which may shape the strip transversely, is disposed between a reel 10 of the strip and the intake gripper 19. The grippers 19, 20 may be as described in Specification 893,001, or have jaws as described in Specifications 809,619, 739,291 and 614,186. As shown, the jaws 21 of gripper 19 are closed hydraulically, along inclined guides 21a, those of gripper 20 being operated hydraulically in a direction perpendicular to the strip. Both sets of jaws 21, 22 are moved apart by fluid-pressure cylinders 28 to tension the strip, and are then lowered, by cylinders 27, to wrap the strip around the lower die 15. Instead of moving the jaws hydraulically, they may be operated by other means, and at least one rib (25), Fig. 2 (not shown), and a co-operating groove (26) are provided on the jaws 22. Operation.-After tensioning the strip, the tension is reduced to a value still above the elastic limit before the grippers are lowered. The upper die is now lowered, strip-tension preferably being kept constant by the escape of fluid from the cylinders 28. After releasing the tension, raising the top-die 17 and the grippers and opening the grippers, a pull-out device 31 is inserted between shear blades 30 to grip the end of the strip and pull the worked part of the strip on to a conveyer 32 for removal after operation of the shear, which may have two pairs of blades, one for severing each side of a gripped zone of the strip.
