Abstract

Cycloaliphatic amines are made by hydrogenating arylamines in liquid phase in the presence of a cobalt catalyst and at a pressure of from 1 to 10 atmospheres gauge. The cobalt catalyst may be added in the forms of the oxide, hydroxide or carbonate. Inert gases such as nitrogen may be admixed with the hydrogen and mixture of hydrogen and ammonia may be employed to prevent de-amination of the product. In the example cyclohexylamine, together with small amounts of dicyclohexylamine and cyclohexyl aniline, is obtained by hydrogenating aniline in the presence of cobalt oxide, lime and sodium carbonate. The process is operated continuously.
