Abstract

A primary amino compound is produced by reducing the corresponding nitro compound in an aqueous medium in the presence of sulphuric acid with sulphur dioxide or a solution thereof or a neutral or acid salt of sulphurous acid in the presence, as a catalyst, of hydriodic acid, a substance which forms hydriodic acid under the reaction conditions, a metal chosen from Groups IB, IIB, IV, VA, VIA and VIII of Mendeleef's Periodic Table, an alloy of one or more of these metals or a salt of one of these metals, at a temperature of from 30 DEG to 250 DEG C., and recovering from the reaction mixture the amino compound which is formed. Examples describe the production of 1-aminonaphthalene-3,6,8-trisulphonic acid, 3-aminobenzene sulphonic acid, 1-aminonaphthalene-6-sulphonic acid, 1 - aminonaphthalene - 4,6,8 - trisulphonic acid, 2-aminophenol - 4 - sulphonic acid, 6 - amino - 2 - naphthol - 1,4 - disulphonic acid, 6 - amino - 4 - hydroxy - 1 methylbenzene - 2 sulphonic acid, 2 - amino - 4 - chloro - 6 - nitro phenol, 1,2 - phenylene - diamine, 2 - aminophenol, 6 - chloro - 2 - aminophenol - 4 - sulphonic acid, 4 - chloro - 2 - aminophenol - 6 - sulphonic acid, mixtures of 1 - aminonaphthalene sulphonic acids, 2-aminonaphthalene-4,8-disulphonic acid, 5-aminoquinoline and methylamine.
