Abstract
1,122,449. Planographic printing plates. OXFORD PAPER CO. 16 Sept., 1966 ]30 Sept., 1965], No. 41478/66. Heading B6C. Planographic printing plates comprising a base and a coating of a pigment and a waterinsoluble polyvalent metal xanthate of an hydroxy-containing natural polymer are made by coating the base with an aqueous composition of the pigment and a xanthate of an hydroxycontaining natural polymer, drying the coating composition and then treating it with a salt of a polyvalent metal. The various xanthates are preferably prepared by treating the natural polymer, e.g. starch or flour, with potassium hydroxide and carbon disulphide to form a potassium starch or flour xanthate which is then dried and dissolved in distilled water. The pigment preferably includes at least 50% by weight of clay, e.g. kaolin, china clay or Lustra Clay; other pigments may be used, especially colloidal silica. The starch or flour xanthate is added to the clay slip while stirring, and butyl alcohol is also preferably incorporated in the coating composition. Preferred polyvalent metals are zinc and iron; examples of salts used include zinc acetate, ferric chloride, copper sulphate and lead acetate.
