Abstract

The invention comprises water-insoluble azo dyes of the formula <FORM:1122317/C4-C5/1> wherein A represents the residue of a diazo component, B represents a benzene or naphthalene residue in which the amino group and the azo group are in para-position to each other, R1 represents an alkyl residue containing a substitutent other than OH or alkoxy, and R2 represents an alkylene group which is bound to a carbon atom in a pyridine residue. Preferred dyes are those of the formula <FORM:1122317/C4-C5/2> wherein X1 represents H, halogen, CN, carbalkoxy, alkylsulphonyl, phenylazo or NO2; Y represents H, halogen, NO2, alkyl, alkoxy, CF3, carbalkoxy or CN; Z represents H or halogen; V represents H, halogen, alkyl, alkoxy or acylamino; W represents H, alkyl or alkoxy; R3 represents H or alkyl and X represents carbalkoxy, acyl, acyloxy, phenyl or CN; and in which at least one of X1 and Y represents NO2, carbalkoxy, CN, alkyl-sulphonyl or phenylazo. They may be obtained by usual coupling procedures or by treating a water-insoluble dye of the formula <FORM:1122317/C4-C5/3> wherein R4 is a hydroxyalkyl group, with an acylating agent. Examples are given for the preparation of the dyes.
