Abstract

1,122,214. Screwdrivers. KEDMAN CO. 23 Aug., 1965, No. 36075/65. Heading B4W. A screwdriver comprises a longitudinally split shank 10 formed of two half round spring steel rods 14, 15 extending from a handle 11 and bent oppositely and outwardly, the ends of the rods being ground to form bit members 12a, 12b which are normally positioned side by side to form a rectilinear composite bit Fig. 4, the bit members 12a, 12b being in contiguous relationship along a diagonally oriented slip plane 12c. A sleeve 16 of moulded plastics material is provided having a collar portion 17 which closely encircles the shank, the sleeve having an internal diameter greater than the external diameter of the shank to prevent binding by outward bowing of shank parts when the sleeve is slid along the shank to press tapered portions 13 towards each other and expand the bit members 12a, 12b as shown in Fig. 5. In a modification Fig. 8 (not shown) a metal sleeve is provided which has a finger engaging knobs of plastics material at the end nearest the handle.
