Abstract
The invention comprises 2-benzyl-phenylacetic acid derivatives of the formula <FORM:1122202/C2/1> in which X is halogen, C1-C4 alkyl, C1-C4 alkoxy, C1-C4 alkylthio or trifluoromethyl. They may be prepared by hydrolysing a nitrile of formula <FORM:1122202/C2/2> e.g. with aqueous caustic potash. The nitrile used as starting material may be prepared by esterifying the acid BCOOH with methyl alcohol, reducing the methyl ester to give the alcohol BCH2OH, halogenating this (for example with thionyl chloride) to give BCH2Y, where Y is a halogen and treating the halide with an alkali metal cyanide to give the required cyanide. In the above formula, BCOOH represents the acids <FORM:1122202/C2/3> The acids of formula BCOOH may be prepared by reacting under Friedel-Crafts conditions phthalic anhydride with a compound of formula <FORM:1122202/C2/4> to produce acids of formula <FORM:1122202/C2/5> which may be reduced to give the required acids, e.g. by catalytic hydrogenation or by treatment with zinc dust in an ammoniacal medium. Examples are given of the preparation of (a) 2-(4-methoxybenzyl)-phenylacetic acid; (b) 2-(4-chlorobenzyl)-phenylacetic acid; (c) 2 - (4 - bromobenzyl) - phenylacetic acid; (d) 2 - (4 - methylthiobenzyl) - phenylacetic acid; (e) 2 - (4 - methylbenzyl) - phenylacetic acid and 2-(4-trifluoromethyl-benzyl)-phenylacetic acid.
