Abstract

Polypeptide ester salts have the formula <FORM:1122076/C3/1> wherein R represents the typical side chain of amino acids, the arrangement and number of which is typical of the protein from which it is derived, R1 represents an alkyl group with 1 to 8 carbon atoms, Q(-) represents a chloride ion or the anion of a carboxylic acid of the formula R11COO(-) wherein R11 represents an alkyl group with 1 to 18 carbon atoms and Z represents the average number of repeating groups in the polypeptide chain, the molecular weight of the polypeptide ester salt being in the range from 150 to 5000. They may be prepared by hydrolysing a protein, suspending the anhydrous hydrolysate in an alcohol in the presence of HCl, heating and neutralizing with NH3 either (a) to an acid pH and recovering the hydrochloride or (b) to an alkaline pH to produce free peptide ester (which is unstable) followed immediately by addition of an organic acid and recovery of the salt.ALSO:Aerosol composition comprise polypeptide ester salts (see Division C3) and other ingredients plus chlorofluorinated propellants, for use as hair sprays.ALSO:Polypeptide ester salts (see Division C3) are used in hair sprays, hair tonics and cosmetic lotions using alcoholic solvents. Other components of the compositions include acetylated or ethoxylated lanolin, polyvinyl acetate copolymers, silicones, shellac and undecylenic acid protein condensates.
