Abstract

An electromagnetic wave reflector comprises a reflecting layer for such waves which is supported on at least one rigid block of an expanded cellular material having a density of from 0.5 to 0.8gm/cc. The said material is made by grinding together, in the presence of moisture, siliceous sand, cement, and aluminium powder and hardening it in an autoclave after expansion. Following any machining of the block, the working surface may be partially vitrified by a flame and a metallic coating be deposited by spraying or otherwise. Alternatively, a synthetic resin coating may be applied to the working face, which is left unvitrified, and be followed by a metallic coating, or a single coating of synthetic resin loaded with metallic particles may be used. Any of the aforesaid coatings may be machined, for greater precision. Blocks may be joined together with adhesive and any remaining exposed surfaces may be sealed against moisture penetration. A part paraboloidal aerial is described, wherein the reflector assembly (5), Figs. 5, 6 (not shown) comprises four blocks (1a), (1b), (1c), (1d) and an arm (6) of the same cellular material, which is cemented to the assembly for carrying the feed horn (7). In another arrangement, a paraboloidal reflector comprises a centre block (22) and a number of petal blocks (21), all made of the expanded cellular material, which are cemented together.
