Abstract
1,121,945. Automatic weapons. RHEINMETALL G.m.b.H. 23 Jan., 1967 [29 Jan., 1966], No. 3399/67. Heading F3C. An automatic gun comprises a sliding breech block 3 having at its front and rear ends drivers 9, 5 such that when the breech block 3 advances a cartridge carried by a cartridge feed means 4 is engaged by the rear end driver 5 and moved to an intermediate position b, from which position it is introduced into the chamber of the gun barrel by the front end driver 9 on the following advance of the breech block. The drivers 5, 9 may be spring loaded, as shown, such that on recoil of the breech block 3 the drives are depressed by cartridges in the intermediate and feeding positions b, a to allow the breech block to pass the cartridges. Alternatively the cartridges may be resiliently mounted or one of the cartridges may be resiliently mounted and co-operate with a fixed driver while the other cartridge is fixedly mounted and co-operates with a resiliently mounted driver. If the feed means projects beyond the end of the gun the rear driver is mounted on an arm which extends into the feed means and which is attached to the breech block (Fig. 3, not shown) When an automatic gun according to the invention is mounted pivotally in an armoured vehicle, only the feed means at the end of the gun need project into the vehicle thus saving space as compared with known guns. Further the ejection opening of the gun may be positioned away from the armoured vehicle.
