1,120,884. Making relay contacts. GOSUDARSTVENUY ELEKTROTEK - HNICHESKY, ZAVOD. 14 July, 1966, No. 31682/66. Headings B3A and B3W. A machine for making spring relay contacts comprises means for punching out a spring blank and for moving the blank to a series of working stations, means for forming contact blanks from wire comprising wire feed means and shearing means including at least one apertured cutter having a gauging stop, and means for forming a contact tip on the wire blank, the last mentioned means having a gripper for inserting the shank of the contact into a hole in the spring blank and for securing it therein. The machine comprises a series of tools operated by linkage from cams on a camshaft 1. Metal strip feed.-Strip from which the spring blanks are punched is fed to a rollstraightener 8 by feed-rolls (not shown) and a further pair of feed-rolls 5 then forward the strip to punching dies. The rolls 5 are intermittently rotated by a crank mechanism 6 through a one-way clutch 7. The speed of the strip through the straightener 8 is controlled by a conical roller 11 which is connected to the straightener by a chain 10. The roller 11 is frictionally driven by the internal surface of a ring 12 which has external gear teeth meshing with a pinion 13 which is longitudinally slidable on the shaft 1. Blank punching.-Blanks are punched out of the strip by a punch 18 and die 15 and are pushed up into the die recess 22. Above the recess 22 is a stop 23 which has a corresponding recess 24 and a transverse slot 25 through which the blanks are moved by a cam-operated pusher 29. Blank transferring means.-The blanks are moved horizontally to the piercing dies 34 by an arm 35 which has three grooves in its underside each shaped to receive a blank and spaced at distances corresponding to those between tool stations. The arm 35 has vertical and horizontal components of motion imparted to it by separate cams. Piercing.-The blank is pierced in die set 34 which is actuated by cam 42 and is then transferred by the arm 35 to the die set 45 in which the contacts are formed. Making and inserting contacts.-A wire 49 is fed through a hole 50 in a stationary plate into a hole 52 of a movable shearing plate. The feed is effected by a movable gripper 48 and a stationary gripper 47. The closing and feeding movements of the gripper 48 are controlled by separate cams on the shaft 1. The cut-off length of wire is supported in the hole 52 by a stop 60, Fig. 3, and moved under a die 64 which forms a head on one end of the wire. A bifurcated member is then moved under the newly-formed head and holds the contact against the die 64 while a spring blank is moved under the die 64 by the arm 35. The die 64 then descends, the member 68 being retracted during the descent and the contact is inserted in the blank. The contact, if singlesided, is clinched by an anvil 74, or if doublesided is formed with a second head by a punch 75. The spring blanks are bent transversely of their length, if desired, by movable dies 77 and 78. Shearing.-The contact has a short arm at one side which is bent at right-angles to the plane of the spring arm and is cut off to length by an oscillating cutter 83 mounted on a shaft 84 which has teeth which mesh with a rack 86 which is reciprocated by a cam 87 and follower 88.
