Abstract

1,120,816. Cold separation of gas mixtures. INSTITUT FUR CHEMIEANLAGEN. 9 Aug., 1965, No. 33942/65. Heading F4P. Separation of a gas-vapour mixture which is defined as a gas mixture containing one or more components, e.g. nitrogen, which have a boiling point higher than the critical temperature of the other components, e.g., hydrogen and helium, is effected by continuously expanding compressed feed mixture within a heat exchanger 3 resulting in partial liquefaction of the mixture, throttle-expanding at 6 the wet mixture leaving the cold end of the exchanger, separating gaseous hydrogen and helium from liquid nitrogen collected in a vessel 5 and passing them reversely through the heat exchanger in separate paths from which they are withdrawn as gaseous products through lines 10, 9. The temperature of the wet mixture leaving the exchanger 3 is below the inversion temperature of hydrogen whereof the Joule-Thomson effect at the throttle 6 is positive. The gas phase withdrawn from separator 5 may be further separated by passage through a second heat exchanger throttle expansion valve and separator the liquid and gas phases from which are returned reversely through both heat exchangers in series.
