Abstract

A process for cis-1,4-butadiene-copolymers having a high cis-1,4 content comprises copolymerizing butadiene and styrene or a -alkyl-styrene in presence of a catalyst and diluent at -30 DEG to 150 DEG C. under pressure sufficient to maintain the system liquid under an inert atmosphere, said catalyst being formed by reacting at -50 DEG to 80 DEG C. a component A which is either (R.COO)nM, R being hydrocarbon and M being nickel or cobalt of valency n, or an organic complex compound of nickel or cobalt, a component B which is a chloride or oxychloride of titanium, zirconium or vanadium, and a component C which is RnM, being monovalent hydrocarbon and M being lithium, zinc, cadmium or aluminium of valency n, the mole ratio of A to C being between 0.5-3 and the mole ratio of C to B being between 0.3-5. The copolymer, which may be a block copolymer, has a cis-1,4 content of at least 80% and substantially no gel. The polymerization may be effected in stages, first with butadiene and then styrene. The copolymer is sulphur vulcanizable.
