Abstract

Novel indane, naphthalene and chroman derivatives of the formula <FORM:1120347/C2/1> or <FORM:1120347/C2/2> wherein the <FORM:1120347/C2/3> chain represents -CZ = CH-CH = CH-, -CHZ-CH2-CH2-CH2-, -CZ1-CH2-CH2-CH2-, -CZ = CH-CH2-CH2-, -CHZ-CH2-CH2-, -CZ1-CH2-CH2-, -CHZ-CH2-CH2-O-, -CZ = CH-CH2-O- or -CZ1-CH2-CH2-O-, with Z being <FORM:1120347/C2/4> Z1 being <FORM:1120347/C2/5> R being H, HO-, HWO-, HWCOO-, PhWO- or PhCOO-; R1 being the same as R; R11 being H, HW-, PhW-, PhCO- or HWCO-; and wherein W is an alkylene chain of 1-4 carbon atoms and Ph stands for phenyl; are prepared by condensing a ketone of the formula <FORM:1120347/C2/6> wherein R is H or HWO-, R1 is the same as R and the Y-X chain is <FORM:1120347/C2/7> with a Grignard reagent of the formula <FORM:1120347/C2/8> wherein X1 is a halogen; followed by optional catalytic hydrogenation, cleavage of alkoxy groups to hydroxy groups, esterification with an active derivative of a carboxylic organic acid or dehydrogenation of a compound wherein <FORM:1120347/C2/9> represents -CZ1-CH2-CH2-CH2- or -CZ = CH-CH2-CH2-to a corresponding compound wherein <FORM:1120347/C2/100> represents -CZ = CH -CH = CH-. Pharmaceutical compositions having contraceptive activity comprise at least one indane, naphthalene or chroman derivative of the first formula above together with a pharmaceutical carrier.
