Abstract
Cellulose acetate is made by the esterification of cellulose with acetic anhydride, in the presence of chlorinated hydrocarbons as solvents, using a catalyst which has been prepared by the reaction of sulphuric acid with acetic anhydride in the presence of acetic acid. 1-20 pts. by wgt. of sulphuric acid and 10-400 parts by wgt. of acetic acid are suitably used per 100 pts. of acetic anhydride, with a reaction temperature of 0-100 DEG C. Methylene chloride is a specified solvent. The product is highly viscous, and is substantially free of gel particles and fibres.
