Abstract

1,119,905. Grinding. SUPER-CUT Inc. 12 Jan., 1967 [17 Jan., 1966], No. 1786/67. Heading B3D. A method of reducing an undulatory surface area on a refractory slab or the like to a substantially smooth planar condition, the area having relatively high and relatively low surface regions, comprises sawing a series of closely spaced parallel narrow linearly straight kerfs through the high surface regions to establish intervening ribs, fracturing the ribs adjacent their base regions and forcibly ejecting them from the surface area, and finally reducing substantially all trace of the remaining rib structure to planar configuration by abrading them from the surface area. In apparatus for carrying out the method, a block 10 which is to have both its opposite surfaces reduced simultaneously is secured by wedges 26 in a rectangular frame 16 having shoes 36 engaging rails 32, 37 along which the frame is moved by engagement of lugs 42 on a chain 40 with the lower shoes. The slab extends on both sides of the frame and passes between two pairs of sawing tools 60 rotated from a common drive 20. Each tool consists of a plurality of discs 62 having abrasive segments secured to the periphery of metal discs and the discs of the tools on each side are staggered relative to each other so that the second tools in the direction of feed of the slab cuts kerfs 'between those of the first tools. After passing between the sawing discs, the slab is carried between a pair of tools 80 each of which consists of a disc 88 having abrasive segments 92, 94, 96, Fig. 7. As the slab passes through the discs, the segments 96 fracture and break away the ribs formed by the sawing discs, the segments 94 further reduce the ribs by impact and abrasion, and the segments 92 grind planar surfaces on the slab.
