Abstract
1,119,875. Grabs. PRIESTMAN BROS. Ltd. 27 June, 1967 [27 June, 1966], No. 28649/66. Heading B8H. In a grab which has upper and lower blocks 9, 10, Fig. 1, and a sliding block 12 which is raised and lowered along telescop c guides 11 connecting the upper and lower blocks, upper and lower rings 13, 18 are connected to the upper and lower blocks respectively by universal joints. As described these joints comprise horizontal barrel-shaped pins housed in cylindrical sleeves. The sliding block may be attached to the lower block to raise the latter and close jaws 16 by catches 39 which are released by a lever 51 and cable 70. Two shock-absorbers 27 are provided which offer a small resistance only as the jaws are closed at normal speed but a high resistance if the sliding and upper blocks move towards each other rapidly when the jaws are opened. This may occur as a result of the jaws not being properly closed prior to pulling the trip cable 70. Shock-absorbers 68 are provided below the hoisting ring 67. A single shock-absorber 71, acting between ears 72 on the upper ring and ears 73 on one of the jaws, prevents the jaws opening too quickly and jamming.
