Abstract

111,968. Trosdahl, K. April 13, 1917. Mercury switches; thermal switches. - A current - limiter consists of a porcelain casing having three chambers 4, 5, 6 connected at the bottom by a channel 3 filled with mercury, a resistance wire 9 in the circuit to be controlled being placed in the central chamber. On excessive current, the expansion of the gas in this chamber forces the mercury away from the centre of the channel and breaks the continuity of the circuit normally closed by the mercury between the leads 3, 11. Oil 7 is placed on the mercury in the central chamber, but may be dispensed with if the chamber is filled with nitrogen. The volume of the central chamber is equal to the sum of the volumes of the two side chambers. An adjustable shunt is provided for the resistance wire.
