Abstract
111,923. Strong, W. J. Dec. 22, 1916. Torpedo nets and screens.-A torpedo screen positioning-device for towed screens comprises a plate 2 which is formed concave towards the vessel and is attached to the spar tow-line 5 by a wire bridle 3 at points near the upper and lower edges, and in the rear of the longitudinal centre of the plate, so that the plate tows outwards and downwards and thereby maintains itself at the proper depth and the screen at the correct distance from the vessel. The bridle has rearwardly extending fingers 4 which can be adjusted, as by bending, to keep the plate at the correct angle. A screen for use therewith comprises preferably a number of wire sections, each made from a single piece of wire and comprising upper and lower bars 10 and diagonals 11. The sections are hinged together, as at 9, so that the screen can be folded compactly and stowed on deck. Floats 13 are used at intervals to support the screen in the water. One or several positioning-devices may be used along the screen, or separate screens and positioning devices may be used in line.
