A refuse collection vehicle body 10 comprises a refuse depository 15, a collection chamber 14, a barrier 28 with a plurality of dependent swing- ing arms 26 pivotally mounted at 25 on brackets 24 fixed to a cross-member 22 and is characterized by a compression lever 32 pivotally mounted on the barrier 28 at 29 and arranged to swing relative to the barrier 28 to crush refuse in the depository 15 and to swing with the barrier 28 to displace the crushed refuse into the chamber 14. The barrier 28 is swung by a secondary ram 35 operating on a lever 52, while the compression lever 32 is operated by a primary ram 34 operating on a lever 44, both levers 44, 52 being pivoted at 45, the rams 34, 35 being controlled by a combined hydraulic and electrical circuit, Fig. 8 (not shown). The refuse is crushed against the floor 16 by the compression lever 32 pivoting about 29, from the position shown in Fig. 1, and swept into the chamber 14 by conjoint movement of the barrier 28 and lever 32. The lever 32 is raised on the return stroke so as to embrace a new batch of refuse (which may be continuously loaded into the depository 15 through a window 19 during the operating cycle). The apparatus for crushing and feeding the refuse may be pivoted upwards about 18 to enable the chamber 14 to be discharged by tipping of the body 10 by means of a ram 13. In a modification (not shown) a non-tipping body includes a ram-operated front wall whose rearward movement within the body serves to eject refuse. A photo-electric interlock comprising a light beam and photo-cell scanning across the window 19 may be used to arrest the rearward return movement of the compression lever 32 if the beam is broken by a refuse bin being emptied into the depository during this movement.
