Abstract

A vulcanizable composition comprises a major amount of a polyurethane and a minor and effective amount of a non-plasticizing polymeric fireproofing agent containing a halogen atom in at least a substantial proportion of its repeating monomeric units, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, a vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer, chlorinated polyethylene, chlorinated polyvinyl chloride, poly-(monochlorotrifluoroethylene), or a chlorine or bromine substituted copolymer of isobutylene with butadiene or isoprene. The fireproofing agent may be present in amount 15-45% by weight of the polyurethane, and may be incorporated by homogeneously dispersing in a polyurethane having a Mooney viscosity of above 70 at 100 DEG C. Other materials, e.g. carbon black, stearic acid, tricresylphosphate, chlorodiphenyl, chlorinated naphthalenes, MgCO3, antimony oxide, talc or organic phosphates may be incorporated in the composition. The compositions may be subsequently vulcanized, using peroxide curing agents.
