Abstract
1,118,948. Soldering. NIBCO Inc. 30 Aug., 1966, No. 38648/66. Heading B3R. In soldering two telescoped members a length of solder is wrapped around the inner member to abut the end of the outer member, a length of adhesive tape is wrapped around the solder and members and heat is applied to melt the solder. To solder a copper sleeve 18, Fig. 1, to copper pipes 16, 17, the sleeve is telescoped on the pipes leaving capillary gaps 20 and a length of solder 22 of 50-50 lead-tin or 95-5 tinantimony is wrapped around each pipe to abut the end of the sleeve. With flux applied a length of adhesive tape 26 is wrapped tightly around the pipe sleeve and solder at each end of the sleeve to adhere thereto. A torch is applied to the pipe and sleeve on each side of the tape and the solder melted to flow into the gaps 20. The operator may see the flow of solder through the tape which may be left in place or removed. The lengths of solder and tape may be wrapped separately but are preferably applied as a unit, the solder adhering to the adhesive and spaced from the edge of the tape by adhesive areas. In the latter case the length of solder may extend from one end of the length of tape to a position spaced from the other end or may be spaced from both ends. The tape 26a, Fig. 7 and solder 22a may be covered with a flexible protective film 35, e.g. waxed or plastic coated paper which may be peeled off the assembly. Alternatively a roll of adhesive tape 41, Fig. 8, has lengths of solder 22b adhered thereto with desired lengths of tape indicated by printed or pre-scored lines or perforations. The tape is preferably substantially transparent, non-combustible and undergoes a visible change, e.g. becomes scorched or changes colour when the soldering temperature is reached and may shrink on heating. The tape may be of fluorocarbon resins or vinylidene chlorides preferably reinforced by fibre glass and the adhesive may be a pressure sensitive silicone adhesive.
