Abstract

1,118,831. Making leaf springs; rolling; improving physical properties. WB AUTOMOBILBAU. 25 May, 1966, No. 23396/66. Headings B3A, B3M and B3V. A leaf spring 1, after heat treatment and surface grinding, is rolled between a driving roll 4 and a small working roll 13 to produce surface consolidation, and plastic deformation below the yield point of the material, the compression side of the spring being subjected to a higher rolling pressure than the tension side to produce a prestressing in the spring. Rolls 5 which are offset from one another feed the spring between the rolls 4 and 13, at the same time producing a torsional moment in the spring. The roll 13, together with its backing rolls 6, is pivotable in the plane of the axes of the rolls 4 and 13 about an axis 9.
