Abstract

<PICT:1118711/C1/1> <PICT:1118711/C1/2> An edge roll, for engaging a margin of a ribbon 1 of viscous glass as it is advanced along the surface 2 of a molten metal bath 3 to control the rate of advance of the ribbon 1, has a plurality of independent sets of peripheral teeth 8, as on toothed wheels 5, 6, 7, for biting into the surface of the glass, the sets of teeth being out of alignment with each other. The wheels 5, 6, 7 together with a disc 25 which forms a groove in the glass, are secured against a flange 22 on a collar 16 by a cap 26 which fits over and is secured to a central boss 20. The collar 16 fits over and is welded to an axle 11 with a bore 12 cooled by fluid through a central pipe 27. The wheels 5, 6, 7 and disc 25 are of material non-wettable by and not attached by molten glass such as graphite, boron nitride, spheriodal graphite cast iron or stainless steel. The teeth 8 have straight outer edges 9 parallel to the axis of the wheels and as shown in Fig. 2, the wheels are staggered so that the edges 9 are not in alignment. The teeth 8 do not extend the full width of the wheels so that they are axilly spaced.
