Abstract
Cycloolefins are oligomerized using a supported catalyst comprising one or more compounds of Mo, W or Re. The metals may be present as oxides in amount 0.5-30% calculated as metals by weight of the support. The catalyst may also comprise compounds of Co, Ni, Fe or Cr, particularly cobalt oxide, in amount 0.05 to 15% calculated as metal by weight of the support, and compounds of the alkali metals in amount 0.2 to 8% w. The starting materials may be monocylic or poly-cyclic mono- or poly-olefins which may be homo-oligomerized or co-oligomerized with other cycloolefins to form dimers, trimers, tetramers or mixtures thereof with higher oligomers. The oligomerization may be carried out at 50-250 DEG C. and 0.5 to 150 atm. absolute in the gaseous or liquid phase with fixed, slurried or fluidized catalyst optionally with gaseous or liquid inert diluents. The oligomers produced may be hydrogenated in situ to form completely saturated cycloalkanes by effecting the oligomerization in the presence of H2. The catalyst may additionally comprise metallic Pd, Pt, Co, Mn, Ni, Fe, Rh or Ru or compounds thereof in amount 0.1-15% w. calculated as metals on the support.
