Abstract
1,3,5-Trioxane of high purity is prepared by a process comprising (1) heating to boiling an aqueous solution of formaldehyde and sulphuric acid, (2) distilling the reaction mixture, (3) extracting trioxane from the distillate with a water-immiscible solvent, (4) washing the trioxane solution with aqueous caustic soda, (5) filtering the solution and (6) redistilling. A further distillation may follow or the product may be further purified on molecular screens formed of silico-aluminates of alkali or alkaline-earth metals. The process may be continuous or discontinuous. An example of a discontinuous process is given.
