Abstract

1,117,901. Charging and discharging vehicles; conveyers. D. C. DUNKLEY. 4 June, 1965 [4 June; 1964], No. 23187/64. Headings B8A and B8E. A device for the planar movement of a load comprises a chassis having mounted thereon a load-moving member which is movable to and fro over the chassis by a fluid-pressure-ram operated pulley and cable system to which the member is attached. The chassis is mounted in a frame 2, Fig. 1, carried by a scissors hoist (3), Fig. 3 (not shown), mounted on a trailer. The chassis comprises four girders 11 ... 14 having rounded ends 15, Fig. 2, and formed with shallow channels 16 in which endless roller chains 17 are mounted. Slats 22 are attached to the chains to form a flat which may be covered by rubber and have a headboard 27. The flat is moved by a pulley and cable system actuated by two hydraulic rams 34, 35 the rams of which have transverse pins 40 carrying pulleys 41, 411 and providing anchorages for the cable 42. Each end of the chassis carries pulleys 43, 44. The cable extends from one of the anchorages round the pulley 43 at the rear of the associated ram, round the pulley 41, 41<SP>1</SP> secured to the ram, round the pulley 44 at the rear of the ram, along the full length of the chassis 45 and around the pulley 44 at the rear of the other ram, round the pulley 41, 41<SP>1</SP> on the other ram, round the pulley 43 at the rear of the other ram to its anchorage on the latter. The flat is secured to the run 45 of the cable. In operation, the flat is moved from a position overlying the chassis to the position shown in Fig. 1. The rams may be double-acting. In a second embodiment, a chassis has overlying longitudinally extending planks (103), Fig. 4 (not shown), fixed to it and between adjacent pairs of the planks are fixed longitudinally extending roller chains (107), Fig. 6 (not shown). A headboard (110), Fig. 11 (not shown), is secured to two wire cables 111, 112, Fig. 5, which are actuated by four telescopically, singleacting, hydraulic rams 113 ... 116, one pair of the rams for each cable and one of each pair for movement of the headboard over the planks in one direction and the other of each pair for movement in the other direction. The cable 112 extends from an anchorage on a pin 131 on the piston of the ram 114 round pulley 123, pulley 130 on the pin 131, and pulleys 124 and 127 (Fig. 8), then along the length of the chassis and round pulleys 134 and 125, pulley 130 on the piston of the other ram 113 and pulley 126 to an anchorage on the piston of the other ram 113. The cable 111 extends in a similar manner. The headboard is welded and clamped to the cables and runs on the rollers of the chains. In use a load carried in a box container which has detachable wheels is linked to the headboard and moved on or off the planks, the wheels being appropriately attached to or detached from the container. The latter runs on the rollers of the chains but these may be omitted if a scissors hoist is incorporated. The headboard may have resiliently-loaded upstanding fingers for engaging slots in the container so as to be linked to the latter. In alternative constructions the flat described in the first embodiment may be wound-up in a like manner to a roller shutter as it moves off the chassis, the flat may be moved off the chassis on to a ramp or loading area, the flat may be rigid, the scissors hoist may be operated in the upward direction only or in both directions by hydraulic rams, and the device may be used for lateral loading and unloading, e.g. of railway trucks.
