Abstract

The invention comprises pentakis - [N-(hydroxymethyl)] circulin and pentakis-[N-(sulphomethyl)] circulin, and their pharmacologically acceptable metal, ammonium, and amine salts. Pentakis-[N-(hydroxymethyl)] circulin is prepared by reacting circulin sulphate and formaldehyde in aqueous solution, when the said derivative being water-insoluble, precipitates out. The sulphomethyl compound is prepared by reacting pentakis-[N-(hydroxymethyl)] circulin with an aqueous solution of an alkali metal or ammonium bisulphite, to give the corresponding salt of the sulphomethyl compound which may be isolated by freeze-drying the solution. Free acid pentakis-[N-(sulphomethyl)] circulin may be obtained by treatment of these salts with acid, or a cation exchange resin at acidic pH. Also prepared by identical procedures are the hydroxymethyl and sulphomethyl derivatives of Circulins A and B. Pharmaceutical compositions having anti-bacterial activity comprise one of the inventive compounds together with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.ALSO:Pentakis-[N-(hydroxymethyl)] circulin and pentakis-[N-(sulphomethyl)] circulin, derived from the antibiotic circulin, (see Divisions C2) or their pharmaceutically acceptable alkali metal, ammonium, or amine salts, are of use in treating fish meal to prevent contamination by Salmonella.ALSO:Pentakis - [N - (hydroxymethyl)] circulin and pentakis - [N - (sulphomethyl)] circulin, derived from the antibiotic circulin, (see Division C2), or their pharmaceutically acceptable alkali, metal, ammonium, or amine salts, are of use in paper mill systems to prevent the growth of E coli.
