Abstract

A composition comprises (1) polyethylene of melt index of not more than 0.5 and 2 to 20%, by weight of the polyethylene, of (2) a linear, head-to-tail propylene homopolymer and/or a linear head-to-tail block copolymer of propylene and a different a -olefin containing at least 70% polymerized propylene, the propylene homoor block copolymer being soluble in boiling n-hexane, up to 10%, by weight, insoluble in boiling diethyl ether, containing 0.5 to 1% ethylene unsaturation and having an inherent viscosity in tetralin at 145 DEG C. of 0.2 to 0.6. Specified propylene comonomers in the block copolymer are a -monoolefins containing 2 to 12 carbon atoms. The propylene homo- or copolymers are obtained by extraction with boiling n-hexane from crude polymers prepared in inert liquid diluents or in liquid monomers by stereospecific catalysis, the copolymer being prepared by polymerizing the a -olefin on to the end of a propylene polymer chain. The compositions are blended, e.g. by extrusion, melt mixing or solution mixing. In Examples 1, 2, 5 and 6, polyethylene and polypropylene are blended, and in Example 4 a propylene/ethylene block copolymer is also incorporated. Polyethylene is blended in Examples 3 and 7 with a block copolymer of propylene with ethylene, butene-1, pentene-1, hexene-1 or decene-1.
