Abstract

A modification of the invention claimed in Claim 1 of Specification No. 1,006,288 which is for an adhesive composition comprising a carboxyl-containing diene polymer and a solid polyfunctional polyester polymer containing active hydrogen functional groups is one in which the polyester is replaced either in part by an active hydrogen containing solid vinyl polymer or wholly by a mixture of an active hydrogen containing solid vinyl polymer and a liquid polyfunctional polyester polymer containing active hydrogen atoms. It is preferable that some liquid polyester polymer is present even when only part of the solid polyester polymer is replaced. The preferred ratio of vinyl polymer to liquid polyester polymer is 0.5 : 1 to 2 : 1. Typical examples of the diene polymers are those produced by the interpolymerization of (1) butadiene, acrylonitrile and acrylic acid, (2) butadiene and acrylic acid, (3) isoprene and methacrylic acid, (4) butadiene, styrene and acrylic acid, (5) butadiene, isobutylene and acrylic acid, and (6) chloroprene and acrylonitrile containing residual carboxyl groups. Specified vinyl polymers are vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymers containing residual vinyl alcohol. Suitable liquid polyester polymers are the polyesters and polyether glycols containing a plurality of carboxyl or hydroxyl groups, preferably hydroxyl groups. The liquid polyesters may be prepared in a similar manner to the solid polyester polymer of Specification 1,006,288 with the addition of a trifunctional monomer such as a polyfunctional alcohol or a polyfunctional acid such as glycerol, trimethylol propane, mannitol, pentaerythritol, trimesic acid, citric acid, fumaric acid and benzenetetracarboxylic acid. Specified polyether glycols are the adducts from ethylene glycol and ethylene oxide or propylene oxide, water and ethylene oxide, 1-4-butane diol and ethylene oxide, hydroquinol and propylene oxide, polyethylene glycol and butylene oxide, glycerine and propylene oxide or hexane triol and propylene oxide. The polymer compositions are dissolved in organic solvents and are cured by means of organic polyisocyanates. The solvents, solid polyesters and curing agents are those specified in the parent case.ALSO:A modification of Specification 1,006,288 which is for coating surfaces e.g. of wood, copper, synthetic plastics or paper, with an adhesive composition which comprises a carboxyl-containing diene rubber and a solid polyfunctional polyester polymer containing active hydrogen functional groups and a polyisocyanate, the modification being the replacement of the solid polyester either in part by an active hydrogen containing solid vinyl polymer or wholly by a mixture of an active hydrogen containing solid vinyl polymer and a liquid polyfunctional polyester polymer containing active hydrogen atoms (see Division C3).
