Abstract

[Also in Division B3] In an electro-slag melting process in which at least one pair of consumable electrodes depend into a cooled mould, the electrical power is supplied from a single phase transformer, one electrode of the pair being connected to one terminal of the secondary winding of the transformer and the other electrode to the other terminal. The electrodes 8 are mounted in a holder 4 on a vertically movable carrier 3 mounted on a gantry 1. In operation the electrodes are fed at a controlled rate into the cooled mould 9, mounted on a trolley 11 by means of a screw 5 connected to the carriage 3. When the melting has completed and a resulting ingot is formed, the mould is moved upwards by screw-actuated means 12, 13 and 14 to remove the ingot and facilitate its transportation to a subsequent work station on the trolley 11. The electrodes are clamped in the holder 4 by clamping shoes 29 which are actuated by levers 22 and weights 23 carried by ropes 24 over pulleys 25, the shoes 20 being insulated from the clamping means by gaskets 30. The electrodes are released by pneumatic means 26 which actuate the lever 22 to counteract the force of the weights 23. More than one pair of electrodes may be melted simultaneously in the process, additional pairs being connected in parallel arrangement to the secondary winding of the transformer.
