Abstract

1,116,947. Automatic frequency control systems. MARCONI CO. Ltd. 1 Oct., 1965 [25 Nov., 1964], No. 47991/64. Heading H3A. A voltage controlled oscillator 6, Fig. 3, providing the final output at terminal 5 at the difference between the frequency f2 of a stable oscillator 2 and the frequency f1 of a second oscillator 1, is stabilized by feeding its output through an isolating stage 7 to a mixer 3 to derive a beat frequency (nominally f1) which is fed through a band-pass filter 8 to a phase discriminator 9 and compared with the output of oscillator 1 to derive a control voltage which is applied to a voltage controllable reactance 10 determining the frequency of oscillator 6. The oscillator 2 may be adjustable in discrete steps over a range of 5-21 Mc/s. and the frequency f1 may be adjustable over a range from 1 to 2 Me/s. The oscillator 1 is a voltage controlled oscillator stabilized by a further A.F.C. loop against a reference frequency fR, the ratio of f1 to fR being adjustable by a control unit 12. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the outputs of oscillators 1 and 2 are combined in a second mixer (14) to derive f2-f1 which is compared with the reference frequency fR to control the oscillator 1.
