Abstract

[Also in Divisions B6, B8 and E2] A bag-like container has (1) a flexible magnetized strip formed from a composition comprising a synthetic plastics material and a magnetizable material attached to an edge portion of the container at or near its opening, and (2) a flexible magnetized strip formed from a composition comprising a synthetic plastics material and a magnetizable material, or a magnetized or unmagnetized strip of ferro-magnetic metal, or an unmagnetized strip comprising a plastics material and a high proportion by weight of finely divided iron, attached to a second edge portion of the container at or near its opening, the arrangement being such that the two edge portions can be brought into close proximity with each other and when the two edge portions are in close proximity with each other a magnetic force of attraction between the strips closes the opening of the container. In a modification one of the strips (1) and (2) is attached to a flap, which extends from an edge portion of the opening of the container and can overlap another portion of the container so as to close its opening. The other of the strips (1) and (2) is attached to the said other portion of the container and the arrangement is such that when the flap is brought into close proximity with the said other portion of the container a magnetic force of attraction between the strips (1) and (2) closes the opening of the container. As described the container is suitable for a gramophone record, engineering drawings, route cards, maps, advertising display, progress cards or identity papers. The container may be manufactured from polyethylene, rigid or flexible polyvinyl chloride, cellulose acetate, polystyrene, a styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer or polypropylene. The flexible magnetized strip comprises (1) a copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate or a copolymer of ethylene and an alkyl acrylate or a mixture of both copolymers (2) a homopolymer of isobutylene or a copolymer formed from a monomer mixture containing a major proportion by weight of isobutylene or a mixture of the homopolymer and copolymer and (3) a major proportion by weight of the composition of a finely divided material that is capable of being magnetized e.g. barium ferrite, strontium ferrite or manganesebismuth. The unmagnetized strip may comprise (1) a copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate or a copolymer of ethylene and an alkyl acrylate or a mixture of both copolymers, (2) a homopolymer of isobutylene or a copolymer formed from a monomer mixture containing a major proportion by weight of isobutylene or a mixture of the homopolymer and copolymer and (3) not more than 90% by weight of the composition, of finely divided iron. As described the strip magnet as north and south poles which are parallel to the edges of the strip. When two magnet strips are used one has its north pole nearest the edge of the bag and the other its south pole. The strips can be inside or outside the container and can be attached by heat welding, pressure sensitive transfer tape or an adhesive.
