Abstract
1,116,495. Worm gearing. HOUGHTONSZEGO LABORATORIES Ltd. 16 March, 1967 [16 Dec., 1965], No. 53376/65. Heading F2Q. In a reversible worm gear, drive is transmitted between a worm 8 and a worm wheel 1 by recirculating balls 15, which roll in a helical groove 13 of semicircular cross-section and in a return channel 14 extending through the body of the worm and opening into the two ends of the groove 13, and engage semicircular section tooth gaps 12 in the worm wheel. A member 7 surrounding the worm retains the balls in the groove 13, the worm-wheel extending through a slot 9 in member 7 to mesh with the balls. Guides (18) (Figs. 6-8, not shown), bolted to flats 16, 17 of the worm 8, smooth the deflection of the balls from the groove 13 into the channel 14 and vice versa. Alternatively, the guides may be formed in rings (25) (Figs. 9, 10, not shown) abutting the ends of the worm (8) and keyed to the worm shaft.
