Waling for use in shoring trenches and the like is of channel section light alloy 11 and has roughening 16 on planar lands parallel to the web. The roughening may be produced by spraying, etching or the like, or by the formation of pyramidal projections. The channel section is preferably flanged 15, which flanges may be turned inwardly to provide the lands.
