Trenches or the like are shored by poling boards 1 of corrugated light alloy having planar lands 2, 3 roughened on at least one side of the board. The roughening may be by spraying, etching or the like or by forming pyramidal projections. The poling boards may be used with channel section walings having complementary roughened surfaces on lands on the neck of the channel.
