Abstract

1,116,334. Lined containers. METAL CONTAINERS Ltd. 4 Nov., 1966 [18 Aug., 1965], No. 36423/65. Heading B8D. [Also in Divisions B5 and F2] A method of making a lined side wall for a liquid-tight container includes the steps of forming an outer side wall portion 11 of fibrous, air-permeable material, forming an extruded, seamless, liquid-tight, tubular lining 15 of a thermoplastic synthetic material, the crosssectional dimensions of the lining being smaller than the cross-sectional dimensions of the side wall portion, positioning the lining 15 within the side wall portion 11, causing the extremities of the lining to engage the extremities of the side wall or reinforcing rings surrounding said extremities, as shown in Fig. 1, heating the lining to such a temperature that the material thereof becomes adhesive, placing the outer wall portion and lining in a rigid or substantially rigid air-tight or substantially air-tight chamber 16 and applying suction to the chamber, thereby to evacuate the space between the outer side wall portion and the lining by withdrawing air from the space through the air-permeable outer wall portion and thereby to cause the lining to engage the entire inner surface or substantially the entire inner surface of the outer wall portion and to adhere to said surface. As described, the side wall portion 11 is of paperboard or cardboard, and may be formed by winding layers of Kraft paper on top of one another, e.g. by helical or convolute winding. The side wall is reinforced by metal rings 14 and has internal ribs 13 adjacent one or both extremities. The lining 15 may be of polyethylene and is heated before, during, or after evacuation of the space between it and the wall portion 11, e.g. by means of an electric heater inserted within the lining.
