Abstract

Laminates of plastic sheet or film with metallic interlayers (coatings) welded into hollow profiles by selective induction heating to generate heat in the interlayers. Heat losses from the plastic surfaces are controlled by also using induction heating on the thin wall (0.3-1.0mm) metallic internal and/or external mandrel used. The inner and/or outer mandrel may have a flexible sleeve or lining which can be inflated pneumatically or hydraulically to pressurise and consolidate the heated laminate into a welded structure. The mounting of the sleeve or liming should permit axial rotation The induction coil may be a single loop profile for traversing the length of the profile, or may be a helical element, pref. operating at =10 kHz. For mfr or e.g. impermeable containers from e.g. layers of polypropylene film metallised with an Al coating, where dimensional tolerances are tight.
