Abstract
An aqueous electrodepositable composition may comprise a solubilized reaction product of a drying or semi-drying oil fatty acid ester with an alpha, beta-ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid or anhydride, preferably including another ethylenically unsaturated monomer, pigments, antioxidants and wetting and/or antifoaming agents. Examples of esters are those of linseed, soya, safflower, perilla, tung, oiticica, poppyseed, sunflower, tall, walnut, dehydrated castor, herring, menhadun and sardine oil; the esters may be modified with butyric, stearic, linoleic, phthalic, iso-terephthalic or benzoic acid, or an anhydride thereof, or rosin. A preferred pigment contains strontium chromate and one or more of carbon black, titanium dioxide, talc, barium sulphate or lead oxides, hydrated iron oxide, cadmium yellow or red, chromic yellow, phthalocyanine blue, or toluidine red; in an example, basic lead silico chromate is also specified. Specified as antioxidants are o-amyl phenol or cresol, and as wetting agents petroleum sulphonates, sulphated fatty amides esters of sodium isothionates, or alkyphenoxypolyoxyethylene alkanols. Linoleates, naphthenates, octanates or tallates of lead, cobalt, manganese, iron, copper or zirconium may be present as driers.ALSO:An electro-depositable organic composition comprising a polycarboxylic acid resin is coated on an electrode by a method comprising removing the electrode from an aqueous electro-deposition bath after coating has commenced to disrupt the occluded gas film upon the coating and then reinserting the electrode into the same or a different aqueous electro-deposition bath and continuing the coating. Preferably disruption of the film is speeded by impinging an air or other gas stream upon the withdrawn coated electrode, or vibrating or water rinsing the coated electrode. The organic composition may comprise a solubilized reaction product of a drying oil fatty acid ester with an alpha, beta-ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid or anhydride, preferably also including another ethylenically unsaturated monomer, or at least partially neutralized interpolymers of hydroxyalkyl esters of unsaturated carboxylic acids, unsaturated carboxylic acids and at least one other ethylenically unsaturated monomer, preferably in admixture with an amine-aldehyde condensation product and/or a polyepoxide or an alkyd resin with an amine-aldehyde resin. Many examples of resins and reaction products are specified. Pigments, such as SrCrO4, iron or lead oxides, TiO2, carbon black, talc or BaSO4, and colours such as cadmium yellow or red, chromic yellow or phthalocyanine blue, may be incorporated into the composition together with antioxidants e.g. cresol, wetting and/or anti-foaming agents; examples are specified. The article to be coated (forming the anode) may be of Fe, Al, Cu, Zn, brass, Sn, Ni, Cr or metallized paper, e.g. phosphate-treated steel panels. After coating the article may be baked.
