Abstract

1,115,962. Cathode-ray tubes. THOMAS ELECTRONICS Inc. 27 April, 1966 [27 April, 1965], No.18551/66. Heading H1D. In a dark trace cathode-ray tube having a screen comprising a layer 36 of tenebrescent material, e.g. an alkali halide, on a thin sheet 35 of mica or glass, an annular or toroidal tungsten filament 40 is provided around the periphery of the screen as a source of heat for erasing the opacity centres formed in the tenebrescent layer by the electron beam. Also an aluminium coating 44 is provided on the flared portion of the envelope to reflect and focus the heat radiation, and heat absorbing material 38, e.g. chromium or a nickel-chromium alloy, is provided on the front of the mica or glass sheet 35 or between the tenebrescent layer 36 and the sheet 35 or intermixed with the mica. A green fluorescent lamp 46 is provided as a source of rear lighting for improving the contrast of the image, the lamp illuminating the screen through a window 48 provided in the aluminium coating 44. The intensity of the rear lighting may be varied by means of a mask or mechanical shutter over the window.
