Abstract

A preservative, for the protection of cellulosic materials (e.g. textiles, wood or rope) against attack by moulds and fungi, comprises an active constituent consisting of or including at least one polyhalogenated phenylester of heptoic or octanoic acid, together with an organic solvent for the active constituent. The preferred esters are pentochlorophenyl and pentabromophenyl esters of heptoic or octanoic acid, while the organic solvent may be a petroleum distillate such as white spirit or kerosene. Additional ingredients which may be present in the preservative are esters of unsaturated fatty acids (e.g. pentachlorophenyl oleate or pentachlorophenyl esters of coconut oil fatty acids), insecticides (e.g. gamma benzene hexachloride or the chlorinated insecticide known under the Trade Mark "Dieldrin") and emulsifiers. The preservative may be applied as a solution in the organic solvent or as an aqueous emulsion thereof.
