Abstract

[Also in Division B3] Sealing means between the joint faces 22, 23 of two members of a cavitated assembly, e.g. a blow plate member 18 and a moulding box member 24 of a core blowing machine comprises a groove 28 in the joint face 22 of one member 18 filled with a seal strip 27 of elastomeric material and a passage 34, 35 in the member 18 through which pressure fluid is introduced between the groove root surface 30 and the opposing surface 33 of the seal 27 to thereby urge a face 29 of the latter into sealing contact with the joint face 23 of the other member 24. The seal 27 may be of closed cell elastomeric material, e.g. cellular rubber. The passage 35 is connected by a pipe 38 with a source of compressed air 39 under the control of a valve 40 operable to pressurize or deactivate the seal. The sides of the seal 27 preferably are bonded to the side walls of the groove 28 and the seal may be moulded in situ in the groove and a suitable method is described in the Specification. In a modification (Fig. 6), a groove (47) is formed in the joint surface (23<SP>1</SP>) of the other member (24<SP>1</SP>) opposite the groove (28<SP>1</SP>) and when the seal (27<SP>1</SP>) is pressurized part of it is forced into the groove (47). In a further modification (Fig. 7), the groove (28<SP>11</SP>) is of dovetail cross-section and a number of grooves (29<SP>11</SP>) are formed in the joint surface (23<SP>11</SP>) opposite the groove (28<SP>11</SP>). In an application to a core box assembly (Fig. 8) comprising a top (54), a bottom (51) and a loose piece (49) fitting in a recess (50) in the bottom (51) and having a core shaping projection (53), seals (57 and 62) are located in grooves in the joint face (55) of the top (54) and in the recess (50) in the bottom (51) respectively and are pressurized by fluid such as compressed air supplied through associated pipes (61 and 65).
